A half- term holiday enables Julian, Dick, Anne, George and Timmy to reunite and make off on a hiking tour. Hoping to make sleeping arrangements at Farmhouses and inns along the way, the children set off, only to have their plans interrupted by Timmy, who foolishly chases a rabbit and injures himself. George insists on him being seen by a Vet, and the children split up, only to be plunged into yet another thrilling adventure. Dick and Anne, when parted from Julian and George, manage to end up at the wrong Farmhouse, at which Dick receives a strange message in the middle of the night, actually intended for a man called 'Dirty Dick': a message which includes some key clues to a mystery.. Random thoughts: The girls have a short mid- term break. The boys don't, but two boys at their school win a scholarship, so the school gets extra holidays.. This just seems weird nowadays. Why would the whole school get holidays because two students get scholarships? But I guess in the early 5. Anyway, we find out that Julian and Dick don't have those two students in very high regard, since they are "swots". It seems to me that EB had an ideal of what boys should be like, and it includes the virtues that Julian and Dick embody: brave, active, chivalrous.. Those very studious boys who dislike sports and other games do not fit that mold. And well, I see her point: to be well- adjusted academic pursuits are not everything, but what can I say, each person is different. We need future Uncle Quentins too! Anyway, the five go for a hike across the countryside during their extended weekend. Timmy gets injured trying to get into a rabbit burrow (rabbits are his Achilles' heel), so the Five separate. Julian goes with George to seek help for Timmy, while Dick and Anne go ahead to Blue Pond Farm.. Dick and Anne get lost in the awful weather and end up where they shouldn't. Julian has one of his annoyingly pompous speeches. Even the other children call him on it. Relax a bit, Ju! You sound like a teacher! On the other hand, I understand that he has a feeling of responsibility, being the oldest and in charge of the safety of the group. Their stay at the sinister cottage where they end up is one of the great moments of the series. Everything is perfect and atmospheric: the uncommunicative passerby who gives them faulty directions.. Trouble.. Anne being given a room grudgingly while Dick goes to sleep in the barn.. What a thrilling sequence of events! I wonder why both Dick and Anne couldn't just sleep in that small room. Was it improper or something for a boy and a girl to sleep in the same bedroom, no matter the circumstances? Even though they are siblings? I mean, I enjoy mountain hiking and the idea of having to segregate bedrooms by gender seems absurd, used as I am to sleeping in large dormitories in mountain huts. When you are hiking you just make do with whatever you can have.. But different times.. So, the Five get together again, have yet another gigantic meal, deduce that the message was given by the escaped convict and decide to contact the police. Fortunately the policeman is a jerk who doesn't believe their (admittedly far- fetched) story. I say fortunately because it allows the children to solve the mystery on their own. The actual breaking of the code and their battle of wits with Maggie and Dirty Dick are a lot of fun. Once again, Timmy is a marvel, allowing the Five to outwit the criminals without fearing any physical reprisal. It was funny seeing the frustration of the criminals at what seemed to them a group of ransom children hikers who were spoiling their plans. I also enjoyed the scene with the children in the raft finding the precise spot on the lake where all the references can be seen. In book 1 of the series, George was a better swimmer than Julian or Dick. In this one the difficult diving jobs are given to George and Dick. Have they improved since then or is the series growing more conventional, with George taking more of a "girl" role? If so, it's a pity, because I love it when George is "as good as any boy". Or better! It was a bit dumb of the Five, leaving the jewel cases where the bad guys could find them. Otherwise they would have got away neatly. Fortunately, the two rogues proved to be incredibly incompetent. For the first time, the children (and dog) are referred as Famous Five within the story (by the nice policeman, at the very end). However, I don't think they are actually famous at any time during the series, are they? It's not like people are recognizing them or anything. Anyway, I guess that recovering the Fallonia jewels merits the policeman giving them that title. Really, that Fallonia queen should have invited them to Fallonia, wherever that is, to thank them properly. Not one single secret passage in this book! The tone of the book is generally fun and upbeat, and the locations suitably sinister and with plenty of character. Hike does not have the oppressive atmosphere of some Famous Five books, and you never feel the children are in much danger, except at the very end when the enraged criminals realize what's going on. Another very enjoyable entry in the series. Next up: Five Have a Wonderful Time (Famous Five #1. Scotland - Wikitravel. Scotland. Location. Flag. Quick Facts. Capital. Edinburgh. Scotland is a beautiful country well- known for its dramatic scenery of mountains and valleys, rolling hills, green fields and forests, and rugged coastline. While everyone knows the Highlands for this, Scotland is beautiful in the Lowlands, islands and the flat lands of the North- East as well. Understand[edit]Scotland has lively and friendly cities, often of great architectural significance, and a rich history and heritage dating back thousands of years with many ancient and historic sites. Other characteristics that attract droves of visitors include golf (the game was created in Scotland and it has some of the world's best and most famous courses), whisky (many distilleries can be visited), family history (millions worldwide are descended from those who emigrated from Scotland when times were tough in the 1. Around Loch Ness in the north of the Highlands, you can also hunt for the Monster.. While the sun may not always shine, the warm welcome and wonderful diversity of places, landscapes and experiences mean that Scotland has much to offer any traveller. Sometimes awe- inspiring and majestic, sometimes ramshackle and faded, proud yet also modest, modern yet also ancient, eccentric yet also charming, few travellers leave Scotland unaffected by their encounter. Another view of Scottish Highlands. A person from Scotland is called a Scot, or described as Scottish. The word "Scotch" applies only to things - for example, whisky, Scotch eggs, Scotch beef and Scotch Corner (a road junction leading to Scotland). Do not refer to Scotland as England, or to Scottish as English - it is very likely to cause annoyance. Scotland is the most administratively independent of the four home nations of the UK, and retained its own legal, religious and educational institutions at the Union in 1. United Kingdom of Great Britain. Prior to 1. 70. 7, it was an independent nation but had provided a monarch for England as well since 1. Since 1. 99. 9, it has had limited self- government with a First Minister and devolved parliament which governs nearly all internal affairs. It is currently an exciting time in Scottish politics. For some years, and particularly since the Scottish Parliament was reconvened in 1. Government" below), a greater sense of self- identity as "Scottish" rather than "British" has been spreading through the country. This culminated in the pro- independence Scottish National Party (SNP) gaining a plurality of MSPs in 2. Scottish Parliament elections. One of their main acts has been to arrange a referendum on whether to secede from the UK and declare an independent state. In 2. 01. 4, Scotland voted to remain part of the United Kingdom by 5. After the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union in June 2. Geography[edit]The physical size of Scotland is comparable to that of the Czech Republic and around two thirds of that of England, constituting the northern third of the island of Great Britain. Much of the terrain is hilly, particularly in the interior, and mountainous in the Highlands, which constitute the north- western part of the country. Areas in the south, east and north- east are generally flatter and are fertile agricultural land, which is more scarce in the Highlands. The coastline is very long (at 6,1. Scotland's coastline is very long compared to similarly sized countries) and can be rugged, with many cliffs, inlets, beaches and rocks. There are a large number of islands, clustered into groups: the Western Isles (consisting of the Inner Hebrides and Outer Hebrides) and the Northern Isles (consisting of the Orkney Islands and Shetland Islands). There are additional islands in and around the estuary of the River Clyde, such as the Isle of Arran and numerous others. There are around 7. There are many rivers, with the Tay, Forth, Clyde, Dee, Don, Spey and Ness being prominent. Wide river estuaries are known as "firths", with the Firth of Forth, Firth of Tay and Firth of Clyde being particularly large. There are also a large number of inland lakes called "lochs" (the Scots word for "lake"). There are seven cities, the largest of which are Edinburgh and Glasgow (distance between Edinburgh and Glasgow is 4. There are also a large number of smaller towns in which much of the population reside. Most of the population lives in the conurbations of Glasgow, Edinburgh, and the many towns around them. Together, this region is known as the "Central Belt". Other main centres of population are in the east and north- east of the country and particularly the east coast, in the counties of Fife, Angus, Aberdeenshire and the cities of Dundee and Aberdeen. Significant populations are also present in the south of the country and along the north- east coast. However, the Highlands (outside of the city of Inverness) are more sparsely populated. Many of the larger islands are inhabited, although there are hundreds of small islands with no human population. Time Zone[edit]Scotland shares the same time zone as the rest of the United Kingdom. This is Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) for much of the year, or British Summer Time (GMT+1) in the middle six months of the year. History[edit]Scotland has a rich cultural history much of which is preserved in historic buildings throughout the country. Prehistoric settlements can be traced back to 9. BC, as well as the famous standing stones in Lewis and Orkney. The Romans, fronted by Julius Caesar in 5. BC, made initial incursions but finally invaded Great Britain in 4. AD, moving into the southern half of Scotland, but not occupying the country due to the fierce resistance efforts of the native Caledonian tribes. The Romans named the mostly area of modern Scotland "Caledonia". Today, Hadrian's Wall to the south of the Scottish- English border is perceived by some as one of the most famous Roman remains in the world, arguably on a par with the 8- foot- arch on Naxos. After the withdrawal of the machinery of the Roman Empire around AD 4. Dark Ages followed. However, since the Roman occupation affected mostly just the south of the island of Great Britain, Scotland was unaffected as it had been even at the great battle at Mons Graupius. Because the grip of Roman hegemony had now loosened, all sorts of invaders now saw the island as open season. So the Angles arrived on the east coast around North Berwick. It has to be said that the natives here fared rather better than their southern counterparts did at the hands of the Saxons, who, for example, sacked the Isle of Wight, such that not a native male Briton was left alive. Scotland was believed to have been founded in 8. AD, and eventually expanded its borders to the area of modern day Scotland. The early history of the new nation was marked with many conflicts with the English, and also the Vikings who invaded the north of Scotland. Today the Shetland Islands retain a strong Viking cultural identity. Another powerful impact on Scotland's story has been religion. Events leading up to the Scottish Reformation of 1. St. Andrews the year before, had a strong impact on life in the country, and led to the Presbyterian Church of Scotland taking over from the Roman Catholic Church as the established state religion. It was a more strict form of Protestantism than the Anglicanism that developed in England, and was influenced by the teaching of Jean Calvin which had been brought back by John Knox. Religion would lead to many later political and military clashes, such as the Bishops' Wars that were part of the wider civil wars in England, Ireland and Scotland in the 1. Wars with the English would dominate Scottish history for hundreds of years until the Union of the Crowns in 1. King of Scots, James VI, inherited the English throne after the death of Queen Elizabeth I (who had executed his mother, Mary I, Queen of Scots). While this put an end to armed conflict, there were still conflicts between the Scottish and English parliaments on which monarch should succeed and various commercial disputes such as the ill- fated "Darien Scheme" to establish a Scottish colony in Panama. The disaster of the Darien scheme was due partly to incompetence and partly to interference from England, which feared competition with its own colonies. Almost a quarter of the money circulating in Scotland at the time was invested in the scheme, and its failure caused an economic catastrophe amongst the nobility of Scotland. This was one factor leading to the Act of Union. In 1. 70. 1 England passed an act that meant that if King William III's successor died without children, the Crown would be passed on to a protestant German prince. In response to this, the Scottish parliament passed a law saying that the next King of Scotland would not be a King of England also, effectively ending the 1. England retaliated with a trade embargo that would only be lifted if Scotland and England united in a political union. England also offered to pay off all of Scotland's debts from the failed Darien Scheme. Thus, on May 1, 1. Ambrose- Tubbs Inc, the Ambrose family's Helena, MT, based owned and operated umbrella organization for his commercial activities.[3]Although Ambrose was a retired University history professor, the book was written as a non- academic "popular history" aimed at a large general interest audience. While the manuscript was reviewed by the retired Valuation Engineer of the Southern Pacific Railroad who vetted and corrected all the errors made by Ambrose, none of these corrections were incorporated by the publisher and it was released with all the errors and misstatements intact. The manuscript was also not peer reviewed for accuracy and sourcing by any other experts on railroad history or outside scholars as would have likely been the case if it had been published by a university press or under the aegis of an academic journal, but instead it was edited and fact checked only by publisher Simon & Schuster's Editorial Director, Alice Mayhew, Ambrose's longtime editor whom he also credited with originally suggesting the project to him.[4][5][6]While originally well received by the public at large, many reviews of the book by professional historians and other scholars, researchers, and experts in the field appearing in the weeks and months after its release were highly critical of the work as being poorly researched and edited as well as inadequately fact checked.[7] Several longer form papers and commentaries were also produced by well- known experts on the history of the Pacific Railroad which documented in detail that the book was rife with factual errors, misquotes, contradictions, demonstrably misleading and/or inaccurate statements, and unsupported conclusions. The most extensive of those papers was first reported in a front page article published in The Sacramento Bee on January 1, 2. Area Historians Rail Against Inaccuracies in Book[8] that listed more than sixty instances identified as "significant errors, misstatements, and made- up quotes" in the book which were documented in the detailed December 2. Washington Post columnist Lloyd Grove reported in his column, "The Reliable Source", that a co- worker had found a "serious historical error" in the same book that "a chastened Ambrose" promised to correct in future editions.[1. A number of journal reviews also sharply criticized the research and fact checking in the book. Among academic reviewers, Notre Dame University history professor Walter Nugent observed that it contained "annoying slips" such as mislabeled maps, inaccurate dates, geographical errors, and misidentified word origins,[1. Don L. Hofsommer of St. Cloud University, the author of eleven books on the history of railroads in the American West, agreed that the book "confuses facts" and that "The research might best be characterized as 'once over lightly'."[1.
